We are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally in 2019!! Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and 2019 marks the tenth Shitbox Rally – this time travelling from Perth on 8th May to reach Sydney by 17th May 2018. Did we mention that we will be doing this in a car we bought for less than $1,000!! Neither of us are unique, we have both experienced the traumatic effects of cancer within our immediate families and amongst our friends, some of whom lost their battle way too early. The fact that we are not unique in these experiences highlights our desire to support this cause. And whilst we will have an experience of a lifetime we are under no illusions of how hard this will be. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. We thank you for taking the time to visit our fundraising page. Please make sure to follow our progress via Facebook and Instagram, we'll try to make it as entertaining as possible for you!
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, this year for the 10th year anniversary rally, over a 10 day across Australia endeavour to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Finally we get around to starting our news feed for the most epic experience of our lives!
We are well on track with our plan, but a few hiccups along the way. Our dream car is no longer so the hunt for a shitbox is back on. We would have loved to take this beauty across the desert but it wasn't meant to be. There's an equally enticing shitbox out there, we just need to find her.
So the car hunt went into overdrive this weekend. Despite having hangovers that would have killed an elephant having watched Jimmy Barnes perform and then stayed up drinking tequila in the spa, we finally got on the road to check out some motors. Whilst we didn't purchase, we can confirm they were definitely shitboxes. We also worked out that second hand car salesmen are definitely not the way to go when buying a shitbox!!
SO WE HAVE A SHITBOX! And it is very much a shitbox. Whilst we would have loved to get a really cool, retro car we ended up acknowledging we don't know anywhere near enough about cars to fix them up. So, out of the blue, this dodgy Magna came along. It was close to home, it seemed shitty enough and it was big enough to carry all the unnecessary crap we plan on taking. Congratulations to Kerrie who sold us the car, you got the much better end of the sale!
So we kicked off the New Year with a Bunnings BBQ. So cool to chat to the local community about what we're doing and why. Loads of stories from people that really confirmed why we are doing this. The best bit of advice we received was to ditch the car we have and buy anything different, wise words considering it broke down on our way to Bunnings! Great day, thanks for the support from our local community.
WE ARE OVER HALF WAY!!!
Thank you to everybody who has donated so far, we are truly humbled with your generosity.
We are now only $3,500 away from our target of $10,000.
Thank you everybody, we are so grateful for your help.
