G'day from Brad and Chris.
We have been friends for 25 years and both of our families have been touched by cancer. We want to celebrate our friendship by driving our (quite crappy) $1,000 car in the "Shitbox Rally" 5150kms across Australia from Perth to Sydney, via Uluru... it's going to be a hell of a trip.
Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and we are chuffed to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity.
The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Well, exciting stuff!
We have a car. It's a metallic green 1999 Ford Futura "wagon". Actually, it's a pretty good car and the previous owner took really good care of it (thanks Chris, and also for the $50 donation to boot...). Our mechanic has just gone over it and it looks like a road-worthy car (phew...).
How does it drive? Like a boat on wheels. Suspension feels like it's been replaced with marshmallows, perfect for desert driving? Hmmm....
Chris (the former owner) dropped the car off and was even kind enough to fit the roof rack for us. Legend.
He seems a bit sad to see his baby go. We are informed that her name is Fiona (of Shrek fame - i.e. big and green...). We'll need to decide whether that name sticks or not!
A special thanks to Chris for even donating $50 to the cause...
Well, we're off!
We managed to get the car from Melbourne to Perth (it's looking tremendous, by the way...). Last night we had the pre-rally briefing and it's finally dawned on us that 300 cars (600 crazy people) are going to be tearing across the outback over the 10 days.
It's going to be insane.
Today marks the formal start of the rally and Brad and I are excited to be on our way. It's been a huge amount of work to get to this point and now it's time to enjoy the ride (literally). A big thanks to Telix Pharmaceuticals and Clarendon Lawyers for the corporate sponsorship as well. It makes a big difference.
Greetings from Kalgoorlie!
First night camping out. It's a pretty communal and friendly atmosphere and it was a great opportunity to walk around and take a look at everyone's vehicular masterpieces. Some amazing efforts.
We are now heading out bush and probably out of mobile data access for a few days but below are some pics for your enjoyment!
It's now been a few weeks since the end of the rally and donations are now closed. We raised almost $22,000 for a great cause, thanks to you. Plus around $8,000 in costs incurred by us to make it happen.
The experience was ... well, I think we are still processing it. It was nothing short than a "helluva drive". We had good moments, not so good moments and some downright shitty moments. But we made it safely to Sydney and seeing our families at the end of the drive reminded us that sometimes to really appreciate the beautiful and precious things in life, you need to isolate yourself.
Nothing does that better than the Australian Outback. "Back o' Bourke" as they say.
We didn't post as many photos along the way as we would have liked because - frankly - there was no internet access for most of the trip (a good thing). However, we have an amazing photo collection (a few teasers below) and we will be putting together an album that we will send to each and everyone one of you (around end-July).
Again, thank you very much for your support and go Shitbox!
Brad and Chris
Teaser photos... album to come soon.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
